Frequently Asked Questions
Can I speak with a referral that has used your service and can provide a review?
Will my health insurance, Medicare, or Medi-Cal pay for your services?
No, not currently, since we offer only non-medical care, health insurance and government programs do not cover these services, but this may change in the future pending upcoming changes to the law. Some Long-Term Care Insurance policies will pay for some or all these services. Contact your insurance agent to evaluate coverage. Starlight Caregivers is happy to help with paperwork necessary for reimbursement from your Long-Term Insurance provider at your request. Also see our methods of payment page.
Why should I use Starlight Caregivers instead of hiring a caregiver directly?
There are many important reasons to avoid hiring a caregiver directly including client safety, liability concerns, tax implications, lawsuits, and employee backup support. Complex and continually changing laws and regulations can quickly become a major financial burden. Starlight Caregivers invests significant time and financial resources into screening, training, bonding and insuring our employees.
You need to consider California regulations related to in-home care including issues related to workers compensation insurance, liability insurance, overtime pay, work breaks, taxes, minimum wage and unemployment laws,
What if my caregiver is sick or cannot make an appointment?
This is one of the many benefits of Starlight Caregivers. We will find a temporary match for service skills and personality, and quickly alert them to action.
What happens if I want to switch caregivers?
We absolutely strive to provide the perfect match for skills and personality right off the bat. If that caregiver does not work out for any reason, we will provide a fresh replacement until you are completely satisfied. If we cannot fulfill your needs, we can provide referrals to other agencies.

How does the caregiver know what to do when they arrive in the home?
Starlight Caregivers are carefully selected to match the client's needs and a service care plan is provided to them before the first visit. The case manager will also often accompany the caregiver on the first visit for orientation and introductions.
How does Starlight Caregivers supervise caregivers?
Starlight supervises employees with random visits in the clients home, by reaching out to clients for feedback, and with ongoing formal evaluations and training. Starlight also uses a web-based platform to provide and receive daily notes from clients and caregivers. Caregiver evaluations are performed at least after their first 90 days of employment and again annually.
How do you select your caregivers?
We differentiate from other home care services by selecting only the best caregivers, and that means roughly 5% of applicants are hired, most of which are certified nurse assistants (CNAs). A rigorous 12-step interview process focuses on both personality and qualifications combined. This process includes hiring only experienced caregivers, training and re-training to our standards, checking references, doing national, federal, and county criminal background checks, reviewing driving records and proof of auto insurance, drug testing, screening for tuberculosis (TB), fingerprinting, and using E-Verify. We also provide our caregivers with continuous education on the latest developments in elder care. Our caregivers are our employees and greatest asset, we manage all aspects of taxes, benefits and workers compensation. All of these elements are critical in protecting and shielding our customers and allows Starlight Caregivers to provide these premium services.
We carefully select a perfect match caregiver for our clients and guarantee the right person for the job is on the job. These unique profiles are set up during our detailed assessment process with clients to understand their care needs and special interests, and also during the hiring process with our caregivers to characterize their skills and interests. These matching models are represented in our custom care plan.

We offer free access to our unique web-based technology that allows you to see exactly when the caregivers arrive and depart, and review any notes the caregivers may have posted. Notes may include what was eaten, activities of the day, toileting notes and other general comments. This is a great way to stay in touch with daily activity, even if you live across the country or overseas.

Absolutely!.This is common, and with the permission of these private facilities, Starlight Caregivers are prepared to work whenever and wherever the client needs our support.

No. Following an initial phone conversation to discover your needs, we will schedule a free in-person, no-obligation consultation with our case manager. This in-person meeting is usually held at the home or current residence of the client needing care, and is a very important step in the development of the Starlight Caregivers plan. As an option, we recommend involving our registered nurse (RN) at the initial consultation. This meeting usually lasts 30-60 minutes so we can fully understand your needs, explain our services, and develop a quality care plan.

Yes, any transportation needs are included in the care plan. This includes doctor's appointments, grocery store trips, hair dressers, hobby trips, church, and any variety of errands. Our caregivers carry validated insurance, and can also drive the client's car (if fully insured). Sometimes the caregivers car is too small or uncomfortable for certain clients, so these details are documented in the care plan.

No. Starlight Caregivers cannot physically administer any medications or injections; this must be done by a qualified nurse as directed by your physician. You can cancel service at any time, but we do ask for a courtesy notice of 48 hours prior to a scheduled service so we can plan accordingly.

Absolutely! This is a critical question to ask when considering caregivers working in your home. Starlight Caregivers are our direct employees, not contractors.
